How to Improve Your Surfing Skills From Home

The only drawback to surfing we can see is that you have to be by large body of water to do it. If you’re based too far inland to make surfing a regular activity, or if your life too often seems to get in the way of time spent out on the waves, then there are things you can do to improve your surfing skills from home. Or from a hotel room, or from your office, or from wherever it is that you have the space and time to do so.

Follow the suggestions below and next time you make it back out there, you’ll be stronger, fitter and more prepared than ever before.

Home Workout

It may seem obvious, but working out from home is often overlooked by people, especially if you’re used to attending a gym or exercise classes. Home workouts are great because they’re free, they’re private (you can even work out in your pants or your pyjamas when there’s nobody else there to see you), and they’re accessible.

You can also look into objects around the average home that can be co-opted as weights at a pinch if you’re really missing weight training.

Indo boards, or balance boards, were originally invented to help surfers practice their balance from home. They’re a great tool for building core muscles, providing balance training, and even introducing novice surfers to the sport. Many pro surfers consider them an indispensable part of their training kit, crediting them with increasing their strength and improving their centre of gravity. Beyond the basic balance exercises, you can also incorporate an Indo board into the exercises mentioned above. Indo board push-ups and squats add that something extra to your workout, and weight training whilst standing on a balance board is a different game entirely. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, training for a competition, or simply waiting out the time until you can surf again, investing in a balance board is one of the best things you can do for your surfing skill level.

Practice Yoga

You don’t have to be a hippy or interested in spirituality to enjoy yoga, but it helps! All jokes aside, yoga is a fantastic way to stretch and strengthen your body, making you more flexible and more in tune with the way that you move. The meditative aspect of yoga can also help you to find focus and a quiet stillness that will always prove useful when you’re out on the water, waiting for the next wave. Train Your Mind

With all this focus on the body, it’s time to consider the mind. Although surfing is a physically intensive sport, it also takes a lot of patience, control and courage to do it properly.
